Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, the institution became Spelman College in 1924. Now a global leader in the education of women of African descent, Spelman is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the College is a proud member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium (The AUC).
Today Spelman’s student body comprises more than 2,100 students from 43 states and 10 foreign countries. Spelman empowers women to engage the many cultures of the world and inspires a commitment to positive social change through service. Instill within our hearts love and respect for each other.
Open our minds to new ideas;
Give us patient wisdom and foresight to plan,
And carry out those plans.
Give us calm strength to build for the future,
To lead, to teach, to create, to select, to govern, to direct,
And in so doing, engender true sisterhood
Help to enkindle that which is just, true, and good
